A lavish palace hall in Edinburgh, where the Queen is about to award the Order of the British Empire – among others to the Scot John Davidson, who greets her upon entering the hall with: “Fuck the Queen! Sorry everyone. Sorry Your Majesty.” Born in 1971, Scot John Davidson grows up in a small Scottish town and develops pronounced nervous tics during his youth, leading to physical outbursts and unwanted verbal slip-ups. Years later, he is diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome, which will define his daily life from then on. Neither in the school environment nor at home are the uncontrolled movements and spontaneous exclamations regarded as medical symptoms; instead, his social environment reacts with mockery or punishment. About 15 years later, a chance encounter with his former classmate Murray and his mother Dottie changes his situation. As a nurse, she meets him with understanding, takes him into her family, and helps him secure a job as an assistant to the janitor Tommy at the local community center. A close friendship develops between the two, through which John begins to find his own path. “Verflucht Normal” entertains with top-notch acting, a touching story, and an astonishing amount of humor. It tells the true life story of John Davidson with zest for life and fine wit, whose honesty and humor have helped the world better understand what it means to live with Tourette's syndrome. As an adult, he advocates for awareness and was awarded the MBE by the Queen in 2019.
