Description
With the exhibition "Die Morgenländer," we look at the emergence of Oriental studies in the 19th century and highlight a surprising insight: the development of Islamic studies, Arab studies, and Orientalism was closely linked to the science of Judaism, emancipation, and reform. The new Oriental sciences were a site of Jewish exploration of their own origins: examining the sources of their culture and history with an autonomous perspective also served as an attempt to free themselves from the discriminatory grip in a Christian society. From this perspective, Islam and the Arab world were by no means seen as hostile-exotic "Others" of Europe, but as sources of European culture as well, challenging many stereotypes of the present, both xenophobic ideas and postcolonial black-and-white thinking.
