Why many mothers are lonely today and what can be done about it. Care work without breaks, functioning in survival mode, and hardly any time and energy for fulfilling relationships: the loneliness of mothers is no longer a fringe phenomenon. It is widespread and yet often invisible. This is not an individual fate: Sabine Diabaté and Jutta Allmendinger discuss a societal problem with serious consequences for all of us. Moderated by Shila Behjat, they clearly illustrate the causes of mothers' loneliness based on the latest research and personal experiences and make it clear what we can do about it. It is time for a fundamental structural change that sees parenthood as a societal responsibility and not as a private burden. Sabine Diabaté is a sociologist and has been leading the 'Family' research group at the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) in Wiesbaden since 2012. She has been researching partnership and family life for twenty years. She is the mother of two biological and two stepchildren and lives with her family in Cologne. Jutta Allmendinger is one of the leading experts in educational sociology, labor market research, and gender equality in Europe. She studied sociology, social psychology, economics, and statistics at the Universities of Mannheim and Wisconsin and earned her doctorate at Harvard University. Since 2007, Jutta Allmendinger has been a professor of educational sociology and labor market research at Humboldt University of Berlin. Shila Behjat, journalist and publicist, worked after studying law in Hamburg and Paris as a UK correspondent for Axel Springer and reported in 2010 for the women’s portal goFeminin from the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
