Our Germans are characterized by a certain lack of joy in dealing with ourselves. We do not value our country as much as it deserves. Our liberal democracy is widely considered to be at risk; confidence in the country's stability is waning. For reassurance, we need a different perspective on ourselves. For the book premiere of "Germany – The Underestimated Country" (Cotta), author Jens Nordalm and former Federal President Joachim Gauck look at our history and culture since the Middle Ages and our democracy as important sources of orientation and self-confidence. They discuss historical reforms and societal progress, our literature, thinkers, musicians, entrepreneurs – and our political system. There are good reasons for a new, calm view of our own country, beyond self-contempt and national pathos. Christian Dunker moderates an unusually inspiring review of German highlights. Jens Nordalm, born in 1969, is a historian, literary scholar, and philosopher. He writes feuilleton essays, books, and speeches – most recently for the Federal Presidential Office and Wolfgang Schäuble. Joachim Gauck, born in 1940 in Rostock, is a theologian, civil rights activist, and politician. From 1990 to 2001, he was the first Federal Commissioner for the files of the State Security Service of the former GDR, and from 2012 to 2017, as the eleventh Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, the first non-party officeholder in this position.
