What if we all together defend decency? Omid Nouripour and Michel Friedman discuss on the occasion of the premiere of Omid Nouripour's new book "Don't be Indignant!" (Ullstein) about ways out of constant agitation and polarization. Fifteen years after Stéphane Hessel's manifesto "Empört euch!", a call to resistance and against ignorance, indignation has become a permanent state. We get indignant on social media and talk shows about everything – about major political issues with the same intensity as about trivialities. There is hardly any room for nuanced answers to complex questions. The result: societal division instead of cohesion, cultural battles instead of solutions, paralysis instead of progress. Omid Nouripour, an expert in compromises by profession, knows: we won't get far with anger and shouting alone. He calls for an end to the culture of indignation, where shouting drowns out every clever answer. Whether it's about migration and identity, climate, wars, or the social state: it's high time to listen to each other again instead of throwing dirt. Omid Nouripour, born in 1975 in Tehran and fled to Germany with his family at the age of 13, is now part of the political elite of this country. Since 2006, a member of the German Bundestag, he is now its vice president. Active with the Greens since 1996, Omid Nouripour was a member of the federal executive board from 2002 to 2006 and co-chair of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen from 2022 to 2024. With his experience as a solution-oriented politician, he embodies a biography between cultures, conflicts – and compromises. Julien Michel Friedman, born in 1956 in Paris, a Franco-German lawyer, philosopher, publicist, author, and moderator, is an honorary professor at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and was managing director of the Center for Applied European Studies (CAES). Since October 2022, he has been a member of the Foundation Council "Places of German Democracy History" and the Jewish Museum Berlin. Michel Friedman is a recipient of the French Order "Officier of the Legion of Honor" (2000) and the Federal Cross of Merit (2001). In 2024, he was awarded the Goethe Plaque of the city of Frankfurt am Main. Please note that due to security measures at the entrance, this event may take a little longer.
