Description

Satire has become the most influential art of our time. Sold-out halls, Netflix producing comedy specials like on an assembly line – the industry is booming. The supposed court jesters are becoming not so secret co-rulers. Comedians are entering politics or shaping public debates like Jan Böhmermann or Jon Stewart. At the same time, part of the scene is changing its political sign. While cabaret was almost exclusively associated with left-liberal critique of power, there are now star satirists like Dieter Nuhr or Lisa Eckhart, who are considered right-wing by many. Populists like Donald Trump or Argentine President Javier Milei, in turn, whip up their followers with grotesque exaggerations. Wasn't breaking taboos once the hallmark of leftist art? Do more liberal times automatically produce more regressive forms of provocation? In the microcosm of satire, cabaret, and comedy, central phenomena of our time are reflected. Jens-Christian Rabe and Oliver Polak aim to unravel the related mysteries and show why the rise of comedy tells us more about the glitz and misery of our present than we might suspect – and more than we might like. Samira El Ouassil moderates the discourse on satire, comedy, and the seriousness of the situation. Jens-Christian Rabe, born in 1977, studied political philosophy, sociology, and literary studies in Munich. Since 2007, he has been an editor in the feuilleton of Süddeutsche Zeitung, where he writes about books and pop-cultural phenomena of all kinds. Samira El Ouassil, author, publicist, and actress, studied communication science and German studies. She is known for her columns, among others, for SPIEGEL and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, as well as the podcast "Piratensender Powerplay." Her bestseller "Erzählende Affen" (Ullstein) was nominated for the German Non-Fiction Prize in 2022. Oliver Polak, comedian, columnist, actor, and author – his trademark is provocative stand-ups, which do not shy away from taboo topics. He is the recipient of the German Television Award and the Grimme Award. His two bestsellers "Ich darf das, ich bin Jude" and "Der jüdische Patient" are published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch.
