Description
Introduction: Christoph Rauhut, State Conservator and Director of the State Monuments Office Berlin
Panel: to follow shortly
Moderation: Verena Pfeiffer-Kloss, architectural historian The subway runs through Berlin, connecting very different eras of the city's development and making more than 130 years of Berlin history visible. This is also reflected in the recent extensions of the network: the colorful, pop-art influenced stations of the U7 to Spandau, the extension of today's U5 from Tierpark to Hönow built in the GDR, or the new stations between Alexanderplatz and Hauptbahnhof. All of them stand for their time – and for the high design standards with which Berlin's subway construction has always been associated. But what happens when such stations themselves become monuments? They must continue to function daily and meet modern requirements for fire protection, accessibility, orientation, and operation. How can historical design, technical renewal, and passenger needs be combined? The series "Young but Monument" takes a closer look at this special Berlin heritage. Together with experts from architecture, monument preservation, and mobility, it explores what makes the U-Bahn buildings worth preserving – and how they can stay fit for the future.
