With Aly Keïta, one of the most significant innovators of the Balafon comes to the ALI Theater. The Balafon, a centuries-old wooden xylophone from West Africa with calabashes as resonators, is one of the most important instruments of the local music tradition. To expand the instrument's sound spectrum, Aly Keïta builds his own Balafons and continuously develops them further. The musician from Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) has taken his instrument far beyond its traditional context over the past three decades, making it a distinctive voice in contemporary jazz and improvised music. For his extraordinary artistic work, he was awarded the German Jazz Prize in 2022. The current album of the Aly Keïta Trio is aptly titled Balafon Evolution. In it, Aly Keïta, together with Italian bassist Roberto Badoglio and Dutch drummer Marcel van Cleef, presents an independent musical language. From Manding tradition, jazz, and free improvisation, a powerful yet finely nuanced interplay emerges, characterized by rhythmic precision, tonal openness, and unbridled joy of playing.
