Satyr's Band «Praetorius meets Jazz»

Description

Historical performance practice and the renaissance of traditions meet the spirit of contemporary jazz. The new project by «Satyr’s Band» presents the multifaceted music of Michael Praetorius in various interpretations: first in its original form with diminutions of the time, then interpreted in the style of Praetorius, and finally embedded in a modern jazz context. In all three musical perspectives, the audience will enjoy not only the voices but also instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries such as sackbut, pommer, dulcian, and recorders. In the jazz section and for the larger works of Praetorius, saxophone and guitar will also join in. At that time, composer, organist, court conductor, and scholar Michael Praetorius learned from the various musical traditions of Germany and Italy and developed both in an individual and captivating way into his typical style. On the other hand, jazz has always been shaped by various influences and is defined by its essence through experimentation and constant innovation. In this respect, the newly composed diminutions in the style of the 17th century, the jazz re-compositions, and the improvisations are very much in the spirit of the experimental Praetorius, who continually evolved and built upon his existing musical knowledge. One can look forward to these exciting musical reflections.
