Description
The pieces demonstrate Bach's compositional art as variations on a single main theme. The Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) is an unfinished cycle of fourteen fugues (Contrapuncti) and four canons composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Art of Fugue was published only in 1751, after Bach's death. Between 1782 and 1785, Mozart wrote six quartets dedicated to Haydn himself. K. 465 is the last in this series: quartets not as "violin plus accompaniment" but with four independent string instruments. Haydn's famous remark to Mozart's father Leopold: "Before God and as an honest man... Your son is the greatest composer I know personally or by reputation..." The musicality of this ensemble drives these two works to unprecedented heights.
