Description
Today they are considered highlights of European landscape painting. The Murianer Caspar Wolf (1735–1783) painted his pictures back then on behalf of Bernese publisher Abraham Wagner. About 200 oil paintings were created. They were intended as templates for copper engravings, which Wagner planned to publish together with texts from naturalists. The first edition appeared in 1777, titled "Merkwürdige Prospekte aus den Schweizer Gebürgen" and conveyed a completely new image of the Alps. The exhibition shows the pioneering project using Wolfs originals from the collection of the Aargau Art Museum and graphics from various series of engravings.
