Small Architecture - Big Stories

Description

Small buildings are everyday companions in the urban space and are often hardly noticed. Whether washhouses, waiting halls, transformer stations, pumping stations, public toilets, or market pavilions: they fulfill important public functions and at the same time tell of the needs, technical developments, and design demands of their time. The 2026 annual exhibition of the monument preservation of the city of St. Gallen is dedicated to fourteen selected small buildings in public spaces. Using historical sources, plans, photographs, and background information, their origin, use, and significance for the cityscape are presented. The exhibition shows how these often inconspicuous structures shape squares, streets, and green spaces and why they are important testimonies of the city's history and building culture. It invites you to focus on the seemingly insignificant and to rediscover the city of St. Gallen from an unusual perspective.
