Description
What happens when the future depends on telling one's life story? For the film, four rejected asylum seekers relive the hearing of their reasons for fleeing and thus shed light on the core of the asylum process. Those who manage to describe their personal danger in their home country 'credibly and without contradiction' have better chances of a positive asylum decision. Will the respondents succeed this time in describing their memories of traumatic experiences in a way that meets the official criteria? Through a simple role reversal, the power dynamic is turned around for once, and the interviewers from SEM answer the questions of the asylum seekers. THE HEARING (2023) thus not only provides insight into the crucial and delicate hearing situation but also questions the asylum process itself. About the director:
