Description
Hiking with Schubert and Wilhelm Müller The season ends with the song cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" by Franz Schubert. The tenor Johannes Gaubitz, accompanied on piano by Alexander Schmalcz, is a guest. Johannes Gaubitz studied in Freiburg and Lübeck as well as with Matthias Goerne. He is a sought-after concert singer focusing on the works of J. S. Bach. Alexander Schmalcz studied in Dresden, Utrecht, and London and is a popular song accompanist alongside his professorship in Leipzig. Schubert set to music 20 poems from Wilhelm Müller's 25-part cycle for his work composed in 1823. It begins in cheerful march tempo, a brook leads the wandering journeyman to a mill where the beautiful miller's daughter lives. Fate takes its course. What initially appears to be love turns into a silent jealousy drama, ending with the young Müller drowning himself in the brook. The cycle is opened with the song "Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust," which was soon set to music by many other composers and remains present in choral literature and children's song collections in the version by Carl Friedrich Zöllner from 1844.
