Jacques Mataly: Horizon Line

La Cabinerie presents a collection of photographs by Toulouse native Jacques Mataly titled "Horizon Line." These are square photographs precisely divided in their horizontal middle by the horizon seen from the seaside. Marine scenes that, far from genre clichés, evoke a broader interpretation than the landscape from which they emerge, already boundless. Because Jacques Mataly does not photograph a specific place or picturesque spaces; he captures the entire horizon, just that: this depth and its imaginary where, standing facing the open sea, our view begins and ends.
No identifiable geography point, but the extent of the sea and the clouds turned into rectangles of light, pure colors, deep shades in which, no longer just our eyes but our mind can dive. A square with an emotional geometry transforming this impossible marriage of air and water into a surface that itself becomes a new horizon.
Jacques Mataly does not also depict a season or an hour; he condenses time as when daydreaming seizes us and nothing else happens, when seconds desert thought, when things lose their names, and then the arbitrariness of knowledge is eclipsed in favor of pure seeing.
The end of the world, forever unreachable, seems to call here for a line, a line both physical and abstract. An imaginary line because it remains invisible between these two surfaces that sometimes clash and other times intertwine. A line we believe to see or guess in this continuous oscillation between the foreground and the background. A line, like the horizon, always very difficult to define because perspective declares itself and gets lost there at the same time. It is a very ambiguous figure of vanishing points, of limits and their transcendence. All this constructs a place that does not exist in reality and becomes the very horizon of our silent reading where desire and dread, strength and vulnerability, our impulses and melancholies coexist.
All of this, therefore, photographs in which Jacques Mataly forcefully reminds us that an image is not narratable and that naming or describing it says nothing of what it makes us see, of what it makes us feel.

Jacques Mataly, born in 1955, lives in Toulouse. He studied economics and geography. Alongside photography, he has collaborated with various television channels.
