Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg is pleased to present a two-part exhibition by Mira M. Yang, developed in collaboration with the Pernod Ricard Foundation in Paris. M. Yang's multidisciplinary practice is based on a performative approach and explores how cultural narratives manifest and express themselves through objects, bodies, sounds, and language. The artist traces the persistence and transformation of cultural heritage as it migrates from one context and time to another, thus opening the possibility – even the necessity – for a nuanced re-examination. In her recent works, the artist adopts a materialist approach to explore specific materials and their residues as vectors of memory and ideology. Unfolding successively in two parts in Fribourg and Paris, M. Yang's exhibition revolves around various gestures of translation and reinterpretation of the little-documented work of Choi Seung-Hee (1911-1969), the first dancer from colonial Korea to perform abroad. Among her proposals is a sound translation, or 'sonification', of dance movements in the form of a large-scale sound installation. The exhibition explores the possibility of creating a living archive of Choi Seung-Hee's work and experiments with different forms of notation and partitioning of artistic expression between dance and sound. In its two-part logic, the exhibition follows dynamics of movement and circulation, inviting consideration of the inherent mutability of cultural forms. Curated by: Kathrin Bentele.
