By Jennifer M. Kroot (United States) Who will be the most beautiful, the sexiest Jesus? This completely crazy election is held every year at Easter by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in a park in San Francisco. The crowd gathers, colorful, joyful, and queer. And these drag nuns host the show.
Their movement was born there in 1979, founded by gays deeply attached to the Christian message, to counter the prevailing religious conservatism. They have since spread around the world to promote social justice, human rights, and “universal joy.”
The film intertwines wacky reincarnations and blasphemous cabaret numbers with chronicles of the exciting and activist history of the Sisters. It transports, with lightness and insight, to the heart of another world. Where one “expiates shame and guilt,” where one stops being torn between faith and desires, and where one joyfully exalts communities. Fun guaranteed!
