Description
A house, a family, a stranger – and a name that no one speaks. Nobel laureate Jon Fosse created with "The Name" a play of tension-filled intensity, in which the unspoken weighs heavier than any word. Since the early 2000s, the Norwegian author has been making waves in the European theater scene in the tradition of Henrik Ibsen with his poetic language marked by pauses and hints.
After a long time, a young girl returns heavily pregnant to her family's house. By her side is the father of the child, a stranger whose name no one seems to know. The mother is ill, the father silent and exhausted, the sister seeks closeness. The situation is tense, the silence weighs heavily in the room. Questions are not asked, thoughts not spoken. Beneath the surface, it begins to rumble until words find their way, but whether the characters truly understand each other remains uncertain.
Jon Fosse, Nobel Prize in Literature 2023 and recipient of the Ludwig Mülheim Theater Prize for his life's work, shows in "The Name" his special art: the magic of silence.
