Backstein Reloaded

Description

"Architecture begins when two bricks are carefully put together," described architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe aptly. So does this well-known, often underestimated, and seemingly banal object provide material for an entire exhibition? Since antiquity, the brick has been a central building material that – stone by stone – shapes buildings, neighborhoods, and cities and tells history. From the walls of Rome to contemporary construction projects, the brick shows its diversity as a material, design element, and bearer of cultural significance. To this day, the natural raw material clay is extracted from pits, shaped, and fired into bricks. From handmade solid bricks to thermally insulating large block bricks, manufacturing processes have changed significantly due to industrialization and new ecological challenges. "Backstein Reloaded" brings together around fifty works from architecture, design, and art that show the material from different perspectives. The focus is on production, ecological properties, as well as design and artistic reinterpretations. The exhibition shows how a traditional building material still offers diverse possibilities today and can continually reinvent itself.
