Description
Opening: Sat, September 12, 2026, 4:00–6:00 p. m. The type case, once an indispensable tool of book printing, organized letters, symbols, and spacing into clearly structured compartments. Later, it found its place in living spaces as a display case for found objects, souvenirs, and personal mementos. In this way, it became a reflection of individual stories and collections. For the Winterthur-based painter Valentin Magaro, the type case is far more than an object: it becomes a metaphor for thought. Its individual compartments evoke the fragmented structure of our memories, thoughts, and experiences. Each compartment holds its own story, and it is only through their interplay that a multifaceted whole emerges. Building on this visual concept, Magaro is exploring the motif of the type case in a new series of works at Villa Sträuli. Through studies, drawings, and compositional sketches, he examines the relationships between form, space, and memory. The insights gained ultimately coalesce into a large-format painting that brings together the diverse visual and conceptual spaces into a provisional whole—while simultaneously serving as the starting point for further artistic explorations.
