Description
A crime that seems solved and a detective who doesn't believe it. "The Pledge" was written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt as a "Requiem for the detective novel" and radically questions the familiar rules of the genre. With biting irony, he sketches the masterful psychogram of an investigator whose commitment to the truth leads him to disaster.
In the forest of Mägendorf, the body of little Gritli Moser is found. Detective Matthäi, who is about to be transferred to Jordan, promises the desperate mother to find the perpetrator. Soon a suspect confesses to the crime and takes his own life. The case seems closed. But Matthäi does not believe in his guilt. Obsessed with the idea of a serial killer, he develops a risky plan. He takes over a remote gas station and tries to lure the perpetrator with a decoy – the young daughter of his housekeeper.
What begins as a determined search for justice develops into a dangerous game with fate. Dürrenmatt tells a story that is as thrilling as it is touching about truth, chance, and the price of human stubbornness.
