In his greed, he turns to the eerie Holländer-Michel, who promises him immense wealth if he hands over his beating heart in exchange for a stone heart. The young charcoal burner agrees but must realize that a heart of stone brings prosperity but also coldness and loneliness. Peter not only loses his humanity but also the joy of life and togetherness. Only after he has lost everything again does he realize what truly matters.
