WHEN THE STONES WERE STILL BIRDS

Description

Pekka is a special boy. His head is slightly crooked, his body slightly deformed. Pekka, who spent his early years in the "Children's Castle," develops more slowly and differently than his siblings. However: Pekka still finds ways when others do not see them. He is a master of life and love. Pekka loves flowers, he loves fir trees, he loves the clouds from inside and outside. He loves the table, grandma's kitchen apron, and mom's scent. He even loves his socks. In short: Pekka loves everything, everyone. But most of all, he loves the stones. He can sit on a stone for hours, waiting for it to turn into a bird and fly away with him. Because, as Pekka knows: The stones were once birds. This story is told from the perspective of his older sister Leena. Many different small and everyday anecdotes show Pekka's wondrous life. He is different. He is allowed to be different. Personally and beyond preconceived opinions, clichés, and diagnoses, this piece thematizes being different – being special. It invites us to not categorize people but to meet them openly – because other ideas, ways of thinking, tempos, and expressions broaden our horizon. The diversity lived on stage is in dialogue with the simply and strikingly designed stage set.
