LAND BEYOND THE FORESTS Romania is one of the most underestimated countries in Europe – and still struggles with persistent clichés. But those who immerse themselves in this fascinating land will discover a world full of contrasts, surprising stories, and impressive landscapes. Together with travel photographers Ruth and Jürgen Haberhauer, an extraordinary journey of discovery begins: from the magnificent cities and fortified churches of Transylvania to the lonely mountain landscapes of the Carpathians, home to Europe's largest brown bear population. Mist-shrouded forests, mysterious castles, and spectacular rock formations characterize this region – and time and again, the view opens up to a culture that has grown over centuries.
In the north, time sometimes seems to stand still. In Maramureș, fields are still plowed with horses, hay dries on traditional racks, and travelers are often spontaneously invited to a wedding – and welcomed as old friends. With one of the last steam-powered forest railways in Europe, Ruth and Jürgen accompany lumberjacks deep into the forests, meet Orthodox monks, and experience the special hospitality of the people. Another highlight is the Danube Delta, Europe's second-largest delta. Here, the Danube branches into a vast labyrinth of waterways and reeds – a habitat for thousands of animal species and one of the most biodiverse natural areas on the continent.
For over 20 years, Ruth and Jürgen Haberhauer have been traveling repeatedly to Romania. For Ruth, it is also a journey to her own roots, as she spent part of her childhood here. Together, they rediscover the country again and again – between personal stories, turbulent history, and surprising encounters.
Why does the Romanian territory expand a little more eastward each year? Where is the heaviest building in the world located? And why does the most famous vampire in literature still haunt Transylvania?
