DIVE INTO THE WORLD OF THE LAST HUNTERS AND GATHERERS A lecture you won't forget: 95% of human history has been spent as hunters and gatherers. The Maniq are today among the last of their kind. Their nomadic life in the rainforests of the Malay Peninsula knows no social, political, or economic inequality, neither between men and women nor between children and adults. The image of primitive Stone Age humans in textbooks and media has little to do with reality. The same applies to romantic notions of indigenous life in harmony with nature. But how and why does a society without hierarchy, ownership, social institutions, or complex technology work? What do people think for whom there is no future or past, only the present? What does daily life look like in a world that does not extend beyond the boundaries of the rainforest? What do people who have no faith believe? How do they raise children if there are no "children" and "adults"? And if we have lived in this or a similar way for most of our history, why did we have to change? A question from wealthy people in the industrialized West. The hunters & gatherers are not interested in this question. To them, we are just strange beings from another world, who do not fit into the rainforest and are therefore the purest entertainment.
Khaled Hakami is a macro-sociologist and has repeatedly spent several months with the hunter-gatherer societies of the Maniq in southern Thailand and the Orang Rimbo in central Sumatra. As an independent scientist, Khaled Hakami teaches at the University of Vienna and reports on life in the rainforest at schools and in public lectures. As an independent researcher, he was allowed to survive among the Maniq and will try to share the cultural shock experienced with the audience present. The lecture was originally planned for 2025. We are pleased to announce that the lecture can now be held at the upcoming festival in January 2027. Valid tickets from 2025 can be used for the lecture.
