Poems, texts, songs “I always found the name given to us wrong: Emigrants.
That means expatriates. But we
did not migrate out, by free choice
choosing another country. We also did not
move into a country, possibly to stay forever.
But we fled. We are the displaced, the banished.” (Svendborger Poems) The day after the Reichstag fire in 1933, Bertolt Brecht fled Germany. He was on a Nazi wanted list. Reflecting on the “duration of exile,” on staying foreign in foreign lands, writing against Hitler, and repeatedly defending poetry in a time of oppression shaped his work. It took fifteen years, during which the poet “changed countries more often than shoes,” to travel around the world. But had exile not already begun before that? Why was it not possible to stop the rise of the Nazis? What did foreignness in one’s own country look like before 1933? Many texts before fleeing depict exile within one’s own country, the exile before exile. After the war, Bertolt Brecht, still one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, lived in East Berlin, where he died 70 years ago. Corinna Harfouch and Die Tentakel von Delphi – Paula Sell, Hannes Gwisdek, Boris Nielsen, Moritz Bossmann, and Johannes Döpping – interpret exile poems and texts from the 1920s such as “From the Reader’s Book for City Dwellers.” Corinna Harfouch is one of the most well-known German actresses in film, television, and theater. She has performed at the Berliner Ensemble and worked with directors like Heiner Müller, Frank Castorf, Jürgen Gosch, and Herbert Fritsch. Recently, she has also appeared at the Thalia Theater. She has received numerous awards for her theater and film work, including the Gertrud-Eysoldt-Ring, the Grimme-Preis, and twice the German Film Award.

The event "WE ARE THE DISPLACED, THE BANISHED" is dedicated to Bertolt Brecht’s work in exile and explores his thoughts on escape and foreignness. With a performance by Corinna Harfouch and the group Die Tentakel von Delphi, poems and texts from the 1920s are presented.
