Description
A performance
With: Ninon Gloger (piano)
Text montage/stage direction: Wolfgang Stockmann A few months before the construction of the Berlin Wall, Gesine Cresspahl emigrates in April 1961 as a single mother with her young daughter Marie from Mecklenburg to New York and lives her life in the new homeland. In the historic year 1967/68, however, everything suddenly changes, events escalate: the American Air Force attacks Vietnam, Martin Luther King is shot, there are violent clashes in the Black neighborhoods, students rebel in the USA as well as across the Western world. The novel tells all of this. And it also tells how Gesine Cresspahl, her now ten-year-old daughter, day after day, for an entire year, tells stories about her own family history in the fictional small town of Jerichow in Mecklenburg: about the Weimar Republic and the Nazis, about the Soviet occupation zone and the early years of the GDR. All of this is interrupted again and again by an omnipresent dramatic present. With current news from the New York Times: the present in the USA and around the world. The FAZ wrote about the audiobook edition underlying this event, that it is "not the pleasing consumption of a classic," but "the engagement with a cumbersome major work"; Charly Hübner is "an ideal casting" for it. This performance also does not seek a quick summary but the way into Johnson's narrative flow: characters, episodes, conversations, memories, reports, newspaper reports from the New York Times, and everyday events of the years 1967/1968, amidst Vietnam War protests, student protests, and preparations for the Soviet troops' invasion of Czechoslovakia. Caren Miosga studied history and Slavic studies in Hamburg, worked for radio and television, and became known to a broad audience as the moderator of "Tagesthemen." Today she moderates the ARD political talk "Caren Miosga." Charly Hübner was born in Neustrelitz, studied acting at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" in Berlin, and performed at numerous theaters, most recently at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. He is known from film and television, including "Polizeiruf 110." He has received numerous awards, including the Golden Camera and the Adolf Grimme Prize. Ninon Gloger is a pianist and lecturer for piano at the Lübeck University of Music. She performs as a chamber musician and interpreter of new music. Uwe Johnson was born in 1934 in Kammin/Pomerania and died in 1984 in Sheerness-on-Sea. He is considered one of the important writers of the post-war period. The "Anniversaries" are Uwe Johnson's magnum opus — an attempt to bring society, life, and politics together and to depict an entire epoch.
