Description

Thousands of refugees attempted to reach Switzerland via Hohenems between March 1938 and May 1945: Persecuted Jewish women and men, political opponents of the Nazis, deserters, prisoners of war, forced laborers, and foreign workers from the occupied countries of Europe. Together, we start at the Jewish Museum and follow the refugees' path to the border at the Alten Rhein. Along the way, we hear stories of failure and death in Hohenems, but also stories of luck and coincidence, selfless help, and difficult decisions. In collaboration with the Canton of St. Gallen, the museum is now developing a permanent educational center at the border – and we keep discovering new escape stories. The bike tour offers insights into our research work and into newly discovered dramatic life paths and fates. Hanno Loewy is a literature and film scholar, exhibition curator, and has been the director of the Jewish Museum Hohenems since 2004. He writes about Jewish culture and contemporary issues, history, and memory politics.
