Description
The Finnish-born singer Tuija Komi enriches classical jazz singing with themes, texts, and tones from the North. She dares to tackle pop anthems by Abba and Simply Red, not shying away from comparisons with Carole King on "It’s Too Late" or Nina Simone on "Feeling Good," and also makes a dazzling impression with ballads like "Gabriella’s Song" from the Swedish hit film "Like Heaven." But her greatest daring, her unique feature, remains the expansion of the jazz idiom through Finnish music. With enormous vocal expressiveness and Nordic humor, Komi manages to win her audience over: she has soul, can scat like the devil, loves improvising, and explores the entire spectrum of the voice, up to joiking, the special singing of the Sami people from Lapland. Komi has the perfect companions for her program. Peter Cudek on bass and Martin Kolb on drums provide the rhythmic foundation. Pianist Stephan Weiser also writes the enchanting arrangements.
