With Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Trio op. 1 No. 3 c minor and Antonín Dvořák's "Dumky" Trio op. 90, two works are encountered that expand the expressive space of the piano trio in very different ways. The three trios op. 1 appeared in 1795 as Beethoven's first major publication and made the young composer known to a broader audience in Vienna. The c minor trio is the boldest and most dramatic of the three works: sharp contrasts, surprising harmonic turns, and an unusual formal cohesion already foreshadow Beethoven's later style. Joseph Haydn is said to have advised him not to publish this trio initially — but Beethoven remained steadfast in his work. After his three earlier piano trios, Dvořák also ventures into something entirely new with the "Dumky" Trio. Instead of the classical four-movement form, six musical pictures are presented, inspired by the Dumka from Ukrainian tradition — a Wechselspiel of longing melancholy and exuberant joy of life. The moods pass like memories: heartfelt songs, dance-like exuberance, moments of quiet reflection, and passionate outbursts.
