Sharing the same fate – or perhaps luck – with Ravi Coltrane or Matthew Garrison, Tomoki Sanders is the child of legendary jazz musicians. All three have managed to earn their stripes and forge their own paths. Throughout their careers, they have already collaborated. Born in New York City in 1994, Tomoki (dey/dem/deren) is no longer a newcomer, but he is too active for that; he inherited the tenor saxophone from his father Pharoah Sanders – and the passion for experimentation. Moving stylistically confidently between Great Black Music, electronics, and avant-garde, he navigates seamlessly between these styles as well as between their Japanese and American backgrounds. After several years in Kassa Overall's band – which was featured at Enjoy Jazz in 2023 – Tomoki Sanders now presents his own project and his debut on the Impulse! label – where his father Pharoah has also left his mark.
