How can one think of an old familiar instrument, ancient traditions anew – and possibly completely differently? Carme López from Galicia demonstrates this. Inspired by experimental artists like Éliane Radigue or Pauline Oliveros, she explored the Galician bagpipe on her debut album "Quintela" from March 2024, producing an experimental sound traditionally attributed to men, more akin to drones and ambient spheres than folklore. In autumn, López released an album of her vocal project Carmela, "Vinde Todas." It is based on her ethnographic research into Galicia's orally transmitted singing traditions, their thematic, rhythmic, and aesthetic diversity, and the gender perspective in the transmission of these songs. Whether bagpipe or singing: Carme López combines tradition, present, and future into an exciting overall experience.
