Description

He is an Afrobeat drummer, hip-hop beatmaker, and a percussionist associated with spiritual jazz – sometimes simultaneously. Tom Skinner has been shaping the London jazz scene for two decades as a drummer and producer. He founded Sons of Kemet and plays in the band The Smile with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. Now, Skinner has found his voice as a composer with "Kaleidoscopic Visions" – his most personal album to date. One song on it is named after his mother. The compositions typically move between jazz, indie, and African rhythms, often meditative, with plenty of space for improvisations by his quintet. Saxophonists Robert Stillman and Chelsea Carmichael weave airy harmonies, while Kareem Dayes on cello and Tom Herbert on bass support the melodic figures.
