Description
A highlight of Enjoy Jazz 2025 was undoubtedly James Brandon Lewis' furious quartet, which vividly embodies the energetic sound of Coltrane or David S. Ware. Lewis is one of the most exciting and versatile improvisers of our time. This time he is guesting with The Messthetics, a band from the hardcore scene featuring Joe Lally on bass and Brendan Canty on drums, former members of Fugazi, along with Anthony Pirog on guitar. Their instrumental rock is so direct, raw, powerful, and yet finely crafted that Lewis' powerful playing is a magnificent addition: After the debut released on Impulse! – Lewis joined the recordings when the tracks were already laid down – the four performed extensively. The atmosphere was euphoric, the interplay fruitful, which is why they went into the studio with new material during the tour, this time as a real band: "Deface the Currency" perfectly captures the live ecstasy of punk rock, free jazz, and funkiness. Everything feels light, says Pirog, as they are "so in the zone of playing together." This event is part of the anniversary campaign "Imagine Futures!" in celebration of the 75th International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg.
