Swiss castles and palaces in the 17th century

Description

Between 1600 and 1700, the construction of castles and palaces was in a state of upheaval: numerous castles and palaces were rebuilt, extended or modernized in what is now Switzerland. These buildings are cultural monuments of the highest order. They bear witness both to the need for representation of the elites of the time and to their desire for a comfortable lifestyle. As such, they represent issues that are still relevant today.
The exhibition in the Freulerpalast opens up a broad view of the Swiss castles and palaces of the 17th century: architecture, garden art and arts and crafts are examined as well as the living environments of the residents.

The exhibition was originally created in collaboration between the Waldegg Castle Foundation and the University of Lausanne. As part of a research seminar led by Professor Dave Lüthi, a group of art history students explored the topic of "Swiss castles in the 17th century".

The new exhibition at the Museum des Landes Glarus has now been created in cooperation with the Waldegg Castle Foundation. The exhibition was on display in both museums during the 2025 museum season. The Museum des Landes Glarus is extending the exhibition and will also be showing it in the 2026 museum season.
At the Freulerpalast, we will be presenting the exhibition expanded with objects from our own collection and with specific aspects of local history.
