by Alexander Stutz Prosperity, democracy, and freedom in the heart of Europe: that is Switzerland! But the picture is deceptive. For a long time, Switzerland was the poorhouse of Europe. And until the 1970s, authorities throughout Switzerland acted in the name of law and order against people whose way of life did not conform to societal norms. Labeled as "work-shy" and "disorderly," especially young women were arbitrarily placed in homes – poverty was fought by fighting the poor. Under the guise of "education" and "therapy," they were forced into hard labor in agriculture or factories. These "welfare coercive measures" are not just individual fates but affected tens of thousands and are part of a collective trauma that reverberates across generations. Swiss author Alexander Stutz listened to those affected, scoured archives, and developed a piece that listens to the memories of people as well as the rhythm of machines in factories. At the same time, it creates a portrait of a society that all too readily overlooks and accepts suffering when it is seen as useful, justified, or necessary. The young director Amelie von Godin, who already introduced herself with the world premiere of Anaïs Clerc's "Shimmering Gorges" in Bern, will direct. A production by Schauspiel Bern.
