Soudný den

Description

We will close the season with the play Soudný den (Der jüngste Tag, 1937) by German playwright Ödön von Horváth, which deals with nothing less than the guilt or innocence of the main character. Railway chief Tomáš Hudetz causes a train collision that results in loss of life. Public opinion first turns him into an unjustly condemned hero (even he successfully convinces himself that he is actually innocent), only to later label him a murderous monster that must be captured and punished at all costs. Of course, all of this happens without knowledge of the details of the event, as the lynching mob already has its truth and desires no other.
