Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Benjamin Grosvenor are both part of the absolute world elite of their respective instruments. The pairing of the two is akin to a summit meeting of modern classical interpreters. This quality is reflected in the evening's program. With the three pieces for cello and piano by Nadia Boulanger, they present a composition by the most important music educator of the 20th century. Hundreds of composers have learned or refined their craft with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, without whom the world of classical music would look very different today. The same can be said of Ludwig van Beethoven. With his Variations on 'Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen' – a famous duet from The Magic Flute – he pays tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. But the highlight comes at the end: Sergei Rachmaninoff's G minor sonata, a 35-minute monumental work full of luscious cantilenas and intense drama. Program: L. v.
