A single tone is enough to immediately immerse oneself in the world of Jan Garbarek. For decades, the Norwegian saxophonist has pursued his own path and created a tone that is stylistically influential far beyond jazz. "The human voice is my ideal," he says – and he comes closest to this ideal like hardly any other musician. His recordings for ECM, collaborations with Keith Jarrett, or the project "Officium" stand for music that defies boundaries and finds its strength precisely in that. Garbarek's compositions open up vast spaces, his melodies stretch in long lines through the pieces. Between almost complete silence and condensed intensity, a tension arc develops that ensures the music remains in motion and develops its own logic. Accompanied by Rainer Brüninghaus, Yuri Daniel, and Trilok Gurtu, he is supported by an ensemble that shares this language. Together, they create music that takes its time and unfolds its intensity precisely in that.
