Beethoven's 7 Variations WoO 46, written in 1800, already demonstrate the composer's art in variation as a form of progressive transformation. Nadia Boulanger's Three Pieces recall a major figure in 20th-century musical pedagogy, as well as a composer with a sober and concentrated language. Beethoven's Sonata op. 5 no 2, published in 1797, helps establish the cello as an equal partner to the piano. Finally, Rachmaninov's Sonata op. 19, completed in 1901 and revised in 1920, belongs to the composer's most lyrical period. Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who combines warmth of tone and natural phrasing, and Benjamin Grosvenor, a pianist known for his refinement, create a program linking classicism, French modernity, and great Russian romanticism.
