On the occasion of the Franciscan Jubilee Year, established to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Gianluigi Giudici Foundation in Lugano presents the event San Francesco e le stimmate – Un racconto attraverso l'arte, curated by art historian Emanuela Rindi. This journey from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period explores images and works that illustrate how some of the great masters of Italian art interpreted the figure of Saint Francis, particularly the moment of receiving the stigmata on Mount La Verna. From the early medieval representations to the narrative turning point of Giotto, the journey will touch upon the works of Cimabue, Sassetta, Gentile da Fabriano, Beato Angelico, and Domenico Ghirlandaio, culminating in the intense interpretations of Caravaggio. Through different epochs and languages, the event will allow participants to observe the evolution of Franciscan iconography and the various ways in which art has sought to convey the human and spiritual dimension of the Saint. At the end of the event, Emanuela Rindi will guide participants on a tour of the Gianluigi Giudici Gipsoteca collection, allowing them to discover the artistic research of the sculptor and appreciate his intense and original interpretation of Saint Francis. Emanuela Rindi, an art historian and independent curator, graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Parma, specializing in contemporary art. She has collaborated with museums and cultural associations and curated numerous exhibitions across Northern Italy and the Canton of Ticino.
