Retrospective José Luis Guerín with 11 films from September 16 to September 29! On the occasion of the release of Histoires de la bonne vallée and the visit on Wednesday, September 16 at 8:00 PM by director José Luis Guerín, Les Cinémas du Grütli dedicate a retrospective to this major figure of contemporary Spanish cinema with eight feature films and a program of three short films, from September 16 to 29. From Los Motivos de Berta (1983), his first feature film, to the popular neighborhood of Vallbona filmed in Histoires de la bonne vallée (2025), more than forty years unfold during which José Luis Guerín has continuously pushed the boundaries between documentary and fiction, observation of reality and memory of cinema. For José Luis Guerín, filming a place always means revealing its buried stories and the forces at play. Innisfree thus retraces the steps of John Ford's L’Homme tranquille; Le Spectre du Thuit brings to light the ghosts of family images; En construcción observes the metamorphosis of a neighborhood in Barcelona and its inhabitants. With Dans la ville de Sylvia, the city becomes a territory of gaze and desire, while Guest transforms a year of festivals into a journey around the world, and L’Académie des muses cleverly blurs the line between speech, seduction, and staging. From film to film, José Luis Guerín invents a cinema of encounter: with faces, territories, stories, but also with the history of cinema itself. Histoires de la bonne vallée today appears as the luminous culmination of this research: a territory becomes a community, and the community, cinema.
