Wonderful and different – Bold color accents embedded in portraits with clear, confident strokes, whose sober elegance emphasizes the essential: The painter Amedeo Modigliani was a character head with bold visions. Few more fitting names could the four alumni of the Paris Conservatory have chosen when they formed an ensemble in 2003, which today ranks among the most sought-after string quartets in the world. Early on, Harald Eggebrecht celebrated the Quatuor Modigliani in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" as a "wonderfully different quartet, vital, lively" and of "sonorous, Dionysian earthiness." The ensemble has more than fulfilled these high expectations in its now over twenty-year success story. The program begins with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Adagio and Fugue in C minor, KV 546, a work of unusual severity and expressiveness. The dark, shadowy-dramatic sound world and the contrapuntal density of the fugue show Mozart from a serious, focused side. The string quartet in G minor, Op. 10 by Claude Debussy, unfolds completely different colors. Shimmering soundscapes, refined rhythmics, and the characteristic cyclic form connect the four movements into a diverse, atmospherically rich sound picture – a key work of French modernism. The finale is Ludwig van Beethoven's late string quartet, Op. 132, whose middle movement the composer himself titled "Holy Song of Thanks from a Healed One to the Deity" – a work of spiritual depth and existential concentration.
