Proserpina

Description

Like Queen Berenice – the title character of the dance opera "Die Lieben der Berenice" in the last season – the goddess Proserpina is also a complex and enigmatic female figure whose fate inspired artists to uncover her mystery. Proserpina traverses time in various artistic interpretations, including visual arts that captured and immortalized her abduction by Pluto in paintings. This abduction causes great suffering for Proserpina's mother Ceres in Kraus' opera: she, who created bloom and fertility on earth, now seeks revenge. Atis is also infatuated with the young goddess Proserpina, although he is engaged to Cyane. Cyane, deeply disappointed by Atis, betrays Pluto by revealing where he can meet Proserpina, hoping to win back her lover. Proserpina's father Jupiter ultimately ends the love turmoil. Although he finds his daughter happy by Pluto's side, for the sake of peace it is decided to bring her back from Pluto's shadow realm to earth – to her mother – for part of the year. Every year, when Proserpina returns to earth, nature awakens to new life and celebrates spring. Joseph Martin Kraus composed his opera in 1781 inspired equally by Mozart and Gluck. He created it as a play between gods and humans, culminating in a musically enchanting ode to nature and freedom.
