Description
Conductor Sir Simon Rattle described the ARD Music Competition as the "Olympic Games of Music." Although the artistic contest does not take place every four years but annually, since the disciplines change each year and one often has to wait for the next opportunity, the comparison fits perfectly. In 2026, bassoon, percussion, organ (returning for the first time in 15 years), and string quartet are up for competition. The Olympic analogy is especially accurate for the latter, as the last time string quartets had the chance to win the coveted prize was four years ago. Over four rounds, participants perform highlights and eye-catchers of quartet literature before a jury composed of members from several leading string quartets worldwide. Which of these works will be heard in March 2027 in Lörrach and who will perform them will be decided at the string quartet final on September 12, 2026, in Munich. Stay tuned!
