Berner Symphonieorchester Krzysztof Urbański conducting Francesco Piemontesi piano Johannes Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 Invited by the OSR, the Berner Symphonieorchester, with its conductor Krzysztof Urbanski and Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi, offers an immersion into the world of Johannes Brahms, a major figure of German Romanticism, in this program entirely dedicated to the composer. Composed while Brahms struggled to overcome the grief following the death of his friend and mentor Robert Schumann, the Piano Concerto No. 1 surprises in many ways. On one hand, by its gravity and emotional intensity, and on the other, by the role of the solo part, which constantly intertwines with the voices of the orchestra rather than imposing the concertante rhythm of the work. The Symphony No. 2, on the other hand, reveals a more luminous and serene side of Brahms, in a more mature writing, reminiscent of Beethoven's Pastoral.
