Berlin and Paris in the years between the end of inflation and the global economic crisis: a short decade in which European metropolises plunged into feverish modernity, while the tremors of the war still echoed and the next calamity loomed on the horizon. Eckart Runge and Jacques Ammon use this tension as the starting point for an evening that does not separate art and entertainment music of that time but makes audible how closely they were actually connected. About the program
The framework is the CD Opium, released in fall 2025, whose repertoire the duo has arranged in their own versions for cello and piano. The program includes George Gershwin's An American in Paris with its incorporated city noises, Kurt Weill's Moritat von Mackie Messer from The Threepenny Opera (1928), and Jacob Gade's Jalousie (1925), one of the most popular salon tangos of its time. Maurice Ravel is represented by the blues movement from the sonata for violin and piano (1923–1927) and the Pièce en forme de habanera – two pieces that testify to Ravel's fascination with Afro-American and Iberian-Spanish idioms. Also featured are movements by Gustav Mahler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Ernest Bloch, as well as a suite from Babylon Berlin, whose film music (seasons 2–4) was contributed to by Runge and Ammon, and in which they appear briefly on screen. Eckart Runge was a cellist of the Artemis Quartet for over three decades, which he left in 2019 – remaining a constant through all the ensemble's line-up changes. For the past thirty years, he has also been part of a duo with the German-Chilean pianist Jacques Ammon, in which the two musicians consistently move between classical, tango, jazz, pop, and film music, without denying the boundaries of these idioms. Original arrangements and a narratively driven, moderated concert style have become their signature.
