Description
Anxiety and defiance! The Madrigal Choir performs motets by Bach and Brahms. Two strong and contradictory feelings make the motet "Jesu, meine Freude" (BWV 227) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) highly relevant, no matter how foreign the text of the chorale by Johann Franck may be: anxiety ("Ach wie lange ist dem Herzen bange") and defiance ("Trotz dem alten Drachen, Trotz der Höll’ dazu"). This and the guarantee that Bach turns it into spectacular music is reason enough to attend the Madrigal Choir Alu Singen concert. How it becomes a pause for the tense setting of "Nothing," how people sing to defy fear, and much more can be heard in this motet. The other motet "Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied" (BWV 225) captivates with the turbulent noise with which Bach sets the call to sing to music. The texts of Psalms 149 and 150 overflow; Bach, who composes in double choir and achieves a richness of sound and form, seems to hint at how angelic choirs sing joyfully in heaven. When, in addition to these baroque works, the two motets "Es ist das Heil uns kommen her" and "Schaffe in mir, Gott, ein reines Herz" (opus 29) by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) are performed at the concert, it is fitting and exciting at the same time. Both compositions are thoroughly romantic music. Moreover, they are approaches to Bach's music in the way Brahms works with baroque stylistic elements. Georg Koch, church music director and district cantor of the Catholic parish of Hegau, will complete the concert program with romantic organ works. In accordance with historical performance practice, a wind and a string quartet will accompany the choir in the motets by Bach. The overall direction is by Hartmut Kasper, and Barbara Kasper plays the continuo organ. Further information is also available at www.mca-singen.de
