Description
Jerusalem during the time of the Crusades: When the Jew Nathan returns from a business trip, he learns that his foster daughter Recha has been rescued from the fire of her burning house by a young Christian Templar knight. The Templar, in turn, owes his life to the Muslim ruler of Jerusalem, Sultan Saladin, who pardoned him as a prisoner because he resembles his deceased brother Assad. Saladin, currently in financial difficulties, invites the wealthy Nathan to test his widely praised generosity and asks him about the "true religion": Judaism, Christianity, or Islam? Nathan, informed by his friend Al-Hafi about Saladin's financial troubles, suspects a trap and decides to answer Saladin's question with a parable. But Saladin is not truly convinced by Nathan's reason and religious tolerance. Yet why not use Nathan's humanity to accept his financial support in the interest of good business?
Current social and global political constellations cast Lessing's famous Enlightenment drama from 1779 in a new light. An exciting political thriller about power, influence, and the reputation of different cultures.
