The Theater Kanton Zurich brings this famous Enlightenment drama from 1779 to the stage, with the ring parable standing like a monument. Jerusalem during the time of the Crusades: When the Jew Nathan returns from a business trip, he learns that his foster daughter was rescued from the fire of her burning house by a young Christian Templar knight. This knight owes his life in turn to the Muslim ruler of Jerusalem, Sultan Saladin. A financial emergency of the Sultan becomes the occasion to discuss the three monotheistic world religions with Nathan. The question of truth for Lessing is a search movement and transfers the theoretical debate about religions into practice, the struggle for commonalities and peaceful coexistence.
